On Sunday, April 29th, a bright and spectacular procession went through the the central street of Kiev to the fiery rhythms of samba. About one hundred anarchists and participating groups from different countries expressed their solidarity with the feminist punk band Pussy Riot, which had been imprisoned in Moscow.
A small demonstration turned into a mass festivities, joined by passers-by and tourists. According to various estimates it was attended by up to seven hundred people. At the beginning of the column there was a banner with a quote from the song Pussy Riot "Death to prison, freedom of protest." There were also banners reading "More than the body!" and "Down with the Inquisition." The sound of Rhythms of resistance was heard all over Khreschatyk street. Activists in colorful costumes and wigs were shouting out their demands, carrying banners, playing drums and dancing.
The action was organized by participants of the anti-fascist Ukrainian feminist group “Good Night Macho Pride”, anarchist and anarcho-feminist groups from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Poland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Hungary, Romania and members of transnational anti-capitalist network Rhythms of resistance.
The demands, which sounded during the action were: "Free Pussy Riot", "Down, down - the patriarchal system!", "Pussy Riot - Out of jail!", "Free Pussy Riot", "Down with the Inquisition."
Since October of last year Pussy Riot held several high-profile feminist protests in Moscow. After the last one, during which a group made a punk prayer "Holy Mary, banish Putin" in Christ the Savior Cathedral, exploded in the media and stressed the connection of Russian government and the Russian Otrhodox Church (ROC). After this action three women alleged of being members of the group were detained and held in custody since March. They are being charged with disorderly conduct with the threat of violence. The punishment under Article suggests up to 7 years in prison. The case is clearly political - no one was hurt during the campaign, even the format of the "punk-a prayer" is estimated by some Orthodox as directly continuing the tradition of “foolishness for Christ" and does not insult the feelings of so-called believers. However, the "Corporation" the ROC and its ally, the Russian government, are trying to silence any voices of criticism.
The case of Pussy Riot indicaties abuse of women, who have declared their opposition to patriarchal systems. Their action has done so much noise not by chance, as not many people are ready to denounce the crimes of the state and the inquisitors of the ROC Company. The authorities make it clear - anyone who opens his/hers mouth is facing a threat of inprisonment. Many people have fear of this. Public representatives of state and church (the main power propogandista today) are closing undesirable mouths with bars and continuosly dig into the past of the girls, looking for juicy details, and put everything into the context of "insulting the feelings of believers". The voice of people, who do not feel insulted by the action is beeing ignored. Now it is most important to support the imprisoned members of Pussy Riot – Maria Alekhina, Nadiezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich. By supporting them we support all women who oppose the conservative patriarchal values.
We took to the streets to support the participants of Pussy Riot, not give that negative attitudes, provided by the media and so-called advocates of "morality", who overshadow the essence of the action in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. It was a protest against the patriarchal system of modern society, against the games of church and the government.
Solidarity with Pussy Riot! Death to jail, freedom of protest!
